About 150 students from all 25 districts of Sri Lanka on Saturday awarded India’s Mahatma Gandhi Scholarships in Colombo. Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and Sri Lankan Minister of Education G L Peiris were present during the award ceremony.
According to a report in Colombopage, the Indian envoy lauded the Sri Lankan students on their achievement and said India will always stand with Sri Lankans in general and young students in particular.
Reminding the common traits of the great Buddha and Gandhi, he said, their ideals still hold good in the fast-changing world. Baglay further asked the young achievers to utilize the opportunity available in India for the betterment of both nations.
India offers 750 scholarships to Sri Lanka annually. Apart from the scholarships, India also provides development assistance, including in the education sector, to Sri Lanka.
