A day after the military in Mynamar seized power, Nepal has called for the “immediate release” of civilian leaders in the country, adding the country is closely “observing” the development in Myanmar.
Issuing a statement on Tuesday, Nepal’s foreign ministry said they were "concerned" about the “safety and well-being” of detained leaders, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
On Monday morning, the Myanmar Military staged a coup in response to, what they call, election fraud in the last general elections. In a statement, the military said they have imposed the emergency for a year and the power has been handed over to Military chief Ming Aung Hlaing.
India also expressed “deep concern” and said it has always supported the process of the democratic transition in Myanmar. Bangladesh, which has its own Rohingya refugee issue to be solved with Myanmar, said they expect the military to follow the agreement of repatriation of refugees.
Following the coup, nations across the world condemned the move by the Military and called for immediate steps to restore the democratic order in the country.
