Just over a year after the map controversy erupted between India and Nepal, there seems to be another flashpoint emerging between the two neighbors. Local authorities in Nepal have been raising objections over a river embankment that India is reportedly constructing along Mahakali river in Dharchula of Uttrakhand.
According to a report on The Kathmandu Post, local authorities in Nepal have repeatedly asked Indian authorities to stop the construction, saying the territory belongs to Nepal.
“The Indian authorities have been building the embankment on the international border by ignoring the request of the District Administration Office of Dharchula to stop the project,” Shobakar Paudel, the director of Mahakali River Control Project in Nepal, was quoted as saying The Kathmandu Post.
Nepalese officials had also sent a report to their home ministry, asking for its intervention in the matter. The report in The Kathamandu Post claimed that the officials from the ministry communicated their concerns to their counterparts in India.
So far the work has not been stopped on the site, the report claimed.
