The Aqina-Andkhoi rail line, a transnational railway link between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan was officially jointly inaugurated by the leaders of the two nations on Thursday, reported TOLOnews.

With the 30 km long rail line, Aqina, a border town in the northern province of Faryab in Afghanistan, is now connected with an important Central Asian country.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani hailed the project as an important milestone in his endeavor of connecting landlocked Afghanistan with other Central Asian countries. “Friendship with Turkeministan is a valuable relationship for the government and the people of Afghanistan.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the project was signed in February 2019. Earlier in December last year, Afghanistan also operationalized the Herat-Khaf railway line, a joint project connecting western Afghanistan to Iran.

Ghani also spoke about other projects like the 500 KV electric line from Aqina to Sherbarghan, and the 200 KV line connect Shebarghan to Majar -e- Sharif.
