Bangladesh-origin American Sazedur Rahman has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the New York Police Department (NYPD). Apart from him, four other Bangladeshi-Americans were also promoted to the rank of sergeant  in the police force.

The announcement was made by the Bangladeshi American Police Association (BAPA) on March 19. The others are Abu Taher Firoz, Mohammed Choudhury, MD Samsuddin, and Rajib Bhowmik.

Rahman, who was born in Jessore, in the southwestern region of Bangladesh, became a US resident in 1997 through the Diversity Visa (DV) program, according to media reports.

He studied Chemical Technology and Polymer Science at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

He later completed the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science in New York.

In 2008, Rahman joined the NYPD as an officer and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2016, according to Dhaka Tribune newspaper.

He had been serving as an investigative supervisor in the NYPD's Equal Employment Opportunity Division for the last three years before getting the latest promotion. He lives with his wife Hosne Ara Rahman and two daughters in Queens.

Earlier in January, Bangladesh-origin American Shamsul Haque was promoted to the rank of Lt Commander in the Detective Squad of NYPD, a first for any Bangladeshi in the police department.

He was also the first South Asian to achieve the rank in NYPD.

In a tweet, BAPA congratulated the police officers, saying: "Today is a big day for BAPA. Heartiest congratulations to all our members who were promoted to Lieutenant and Sergeant. Our dream of seeing a BAPA supervisor assigned to every NYPD command is coming close to reality with every promotion.

“A big round of applause on your promotion. You made your families proud and you made your community proud. Job well done. We are wishing you much more success!"
