Sri Lanka gets Egypt’s ‘unconditional support’ over human rights issue

As international pressure against the Sri Lankan government increases over ‘deteriorating human rights conditions’, Egypt on Tuesday extended its “unconditional” support for Sri Lanka’s sovereignty and independence.
According to a report in Daily Mirror, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi wrote a letter, extending his nation's greetings on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s 73rd Independence Day.
Sisi extended its “staunch and unconditional support to the dignity, independence, sovereignty, and the unity of Sri Lankan nation in the face of mounting internal and external pressures.”
Recently, the United Nation Human Rights Council released a report, highlighting the poor conditions of human rights in Sri Lanka. In the report, the UNHRC also urged the international community for “enhanced monitoring and strong preventive actions.”
“Sri Lanka's current trajectory sets the scene for the recurrence of the policies and practices that gave rise to grave human rights violations." the report warned. The United States’ State Department said they were “carefully reviewing” the UNHCR report.
Sisi’s support came a day after when the Sri Lankan government reportedly started reaching out to several nations, including India, ahead of a crucial UNHRC hearing in March. Reports say western nations plan to bring a strong-worded resolution in the meet. There is also a possibility that Sri Lanka might see punitive and intrusive actions against it.
