The SARS COV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, has around 34 unique mutants in Bangladesh. The virus, researchers claim, has mutated 4,604 times in Bangladesh since the first week of December last year. The 34 new mutants are unique to Bangladesh.

An analysis of genome sequence by the researchers of Bangladesh in collaboration with Malaysia's Monash University came up with these new revelations. The unique new variants are named “Bangla Mutation,” according to a report in the Daily Star.

Most of the new variants have been found in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Chandpur regions, the researchers said. Adnan Mannan, associate professor of Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of Chittagong.

The research has been published in the International Journal of Virus Research. These variants, researchers said, will further be studied to see whether any of these variants shows resistance to vaccines.

Mahbub Hasan, one of the researchers, said the team would further analyze if these variants pose a significant danger in the country. As in the case of the South African variant, researchers found that the variant shows significant resistance to the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
