A woman journalist with a leading newspaper has been arrested under the Official Secrets Act in Bangladesh, Prothom Alo reported. Prothom Alo senior correspondent Rozina Islam was arrested on Monday night after the case was filed against her at the Shahbagh police station.
Deputy secretary of the health services division Shibbir Ahmed Osmani is the plaintiff of the case, the report said.
Additional deputy commissioner of Ramna division Harun Ar Rashid said Rozina Islam had been shown arrested in this case.
Charges have been brought against Rozina Islam under Sections two sections of the country’s penal code and another two sections of the Official Secrets Act.
Rozina Islam had gone to the health ministry in the secretariat on professional duty. At around 3:00pm she was detained in a room there by officials of the ministry. Later at 8:00pm she was handed over to Shahbagh police station.
She was then taken to the police station at around 9:00 pm.
Journalists across several districts in Bangladesh Tuesday staged human-chain demonstrations to protest the alleged harassment and arrest of Rozina Alam.
