In view of the increased security threat in Kabul, the Afghan government will install high-tech security cameras all over the capital. In the past two months, Kabul saw constant IED bombings and targeted killings. 

The decision was announced by the country’s first Vice-President Amrullah Saleh who also holds charge of the capital’s security. Saleh said the project will cost around $100 million and it will be covered by NATO’s Resolute Support Mission. 

“The space will become narrower for terrorists and thieves, not wider,” Saleh was quoted as saying by TOLOnews. He also mentioned the increased activities of NDS, saying some terrorists recently threw bombs in neighborhood garbage due to fear of operations by the Afghan forces. 

For the last two months, the government has been facing heat over its failure to contain the deteriorating security situation in the capital. Roadside bombings, magnetic IEDs, and targeted killings have become a common occurrence. And it is happening despite the government being engaged with the Taliban for a political solution to end the four-decade-old conflict in the country.  

Daily bombings and fightings soured the initial public optimism that people have had at the start of the intra-Afghan dialogue in September last year. 

Earlier, the government had decided to double the number of police personnel in Kabul. The decision to install CCTVs is the latest effort the government took to address the security challenge in the capital city.
