Bangladesh has asked students enrolled in its universities to register for Covid-19 vaccines as the country looks to resume physical classes soon. Students have been asked to enroll by 27 September, media reports said. The decision to vaccinate students has come after the country’s top officials from health, education departments held a meeting to chart out a strategy to resume classes in universities.

Officials of the University Grant Commission (UGC) asked students to complete their registration using the National Identity Card (NID) and those who don’t have the NID can complete registration using their berth certificates, reported The Daily Mirror.

Schools in the country have already been opened recently with strict health guidelines in place. The Focus has now shifted to open universities and all public and private higher education institutes.

"If any university considers that all their students have completed registration, they can reopen any time based on approval of their academic council and syndicate," Professor Muhammed Alamgir, a member of the UGC, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star newspaper.

Daily infections have come down significantly in recent weeks.

A few months back, Bangladesh saw its worst-ever Covid surge which overwhelmed its health infrastructure. At the peak of the crisis, it was reporting over 12,000 daily infections.

In the last few months, the government has taken many steps, including recruitment of doctors and health workers, enhancing health infrastructure to boost the pandemic response. Furthermore, the government has also stepped up its vaccination pace. Over 33 million doses of vaccines have been administered so far.

The administration has currently been in talks with China for 100 million more Covid vaccine
