China is always prepared to offer its help to the Maldives in times of need,  Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Zhang Lizhong has stated. 

Ambassador Lizhong tweeted, “China is always ready to offer its helping hand to the Maldives for a strengthened partnership and shared future.”

The tweet came in the backdrop of growing concern over the country’s ballooning foreign debt and calls for the restructuring of loans taken from Chinese financial institutions. 

The Maldives has obtained an estimated $1.5 billion from China as loans. This includes USD 600 million obtained by the Maldivian government alone. The figure is also inclusive of loans taken by various Maldivian companies
