Former Maldives president and current Parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Friday attributed his party's work in democracy to lessons derived from Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence movement.

Mahatma Gandhi was Indian anti-colonial nationalist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
