After a recent ruling by Nepal’s Supreme Court, rendering the 2018 unification of communist factions in Nepal null and void, the two communist factions are now jostling to cobble up an alliance with other non-communist parties to form a government. 

According to a report in the Himalayan Times, the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led CPN-Maoist Centre was in touch with political parties, including the Nepali Congress and Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, about the formation of the next government. The talks include their coordination in parliament, implementation of the constitution, and other political issues.

CPN-MC Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said his party would also hold discussions with CPN-UML if need be, but their main focus would be on holding talks with the NC and the JSP-N. 

Shrestha also said the party would call on the status of MPs who had gone to UML after holding a discussion with them.

Political parties found themselves in a fix as the apex court decision changed the political calculation overnight. Earlier, the faction led by Prime Minister Oli had lesser MPs than his rival the Dahal-Nepal, but with recent ruling, his faction now emerged as the largest one there.
