Supporters of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Saturday hit the streets in Kathmandu, demanding five more years for their leader in the upcoming general election, The Himalayan Post.

Most of the supporters were from the Rashtriya Yuva Sangh, a youth wing of the ruling NCP which is experiencing a split. Ever since the dissolution of the lower house of parliament by Oli, the capital saw several demonstrations, either in support of the move or against it.

In the past weeks, opposition parties witnessed took out several rallies, calling Oli’s move "unconstitutional" and "trampling of democracy". The NCP faction, led by Dahal and Madhav Nepal, also organized protest marches against Oli.

Oli’s rivals, Dahal and Madhav Nepal, had been demanding Oli’s resignation from the prime minister post. Oli’s December 20 decision to dissolve the house was driven by his fear of losing the majority in the party. The ruling NCP saw a vertical split soon after Oli unilaterally dissolved the house.

The election commission would soon take a call on recognizing the split in the party. The Dahal faction has already filed an application in the commission, seeking official recognition.

Around 22 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutional validity of Oli’s decision.
