A roadside improvised explosive device went off, killing five workers and injuring two security personnel in Sibi district of Pakistan’s restive Baluchistan province, reported Dawn.
Workers, who were working on a nearby pipeline project, were all traveling on a pick-up truck when the explosion hit the vehicle on Friday evening. Four of the workers were killed while the two security personnel, who were accompanying them, injured in the incident.
The blast was a very powerful one, said Syed Zahid Shah, the deputy police commissioner of Sibi. No group has yet taken the responsibility for the attack. Security forces rushed to the spot soon after the incident, he said. Forces have also launched a search operation to nab the insurgents involved in the attack.
The province, marred by a decades-long insurgency, sees regular attacks against security forces by Baluch insurgents. Pakistan security forces often escort construction workers in the province as insurgents now regularly target development projects there.
