The discovery of multiple spy cameras, installed at the polling booth, in the senate chairman election in Pakistan, caused a major uproar in parliament, with opposition parties demanding an inquiry into the incident.
Mustafa Nawaz Khokar, a senator from Pakistan People Party, also tweeted several pictures, indicating the installation of spy cameras at several locations in the polling booth.
He also alleged that some of the senate staff disclosed to him that Sadiq Sanjarani, the incumbent chairman of the senate, left the senate building at 5:30 in the morning.
Soon after the protest, senate presiding officer ordered the setting up of a fresh polling booth. "The current polling booth should be removed, another should be set up afresh,” he quoted as saying by Dawn.
The incident caused fresh embarrassment for the ruling party who is yet to recover from the setback it got in the recently held Senate elections. Yusuf Raza Gilani, a joint opposition candidate, scored a surprising victory in the Islamabad senate seat, defeating the ruling PTI candidate.
Meanwhile, the ruling party blamed the incident on opposition parties. Pakistan’s Information Minister Shibli Faraz vowed to expose the opposition, saying many of the senate officers were appointed during the tenure of opposition parties, and they have been doing this for a long time.
