India registered its best showing to date at the Paralympic Games for athletes with disabilities, finishing with five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals in Tokyo. With a total of 19 medals, India went past its previous best tally of four medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. India had gone into the Games with its largest-ever contingent of 54 athletes.
India won its first medal of the Games through Bhavinaben Patel, who brought home silver in table tennis women's singles (Class 4), while Krishna Nagar won gold in badminton men's singles (SH6) to end India's campaign in style on the last day of the Games.
Indian shooters brought home two gold medals, and five in total. Avani Lekhara and Singhraj Adana won two medals each.
India shone in athletics as well, with four medals in the high jump, three in javelin throw and one in the discus throw.
Javelin thrower Sumit Antil secured the only athletics gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics for India.
India also had a good outing in badminton, which was being played at the Paralympics for the first time this year.
Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar both won gold as Indian shuttlers brought home four medals in total.
India's stunning performances at the Tokyo Paralympics follow the country registering its best medal haul in the Olympic Games as well, with a tally of seven medals.
