India, Bhutan discuss waterways connectivity through Brahmaputra to expand economic ties

India and Bhutan held talks on enhancing connectivity by utilizing potential waterways on the Brahmaputra river on the sidelines of the Waterways Conclave held in Dibrugarh in Assam.
India’s Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Bhutan’s Economic Affairs Minister Loknath Sharma held delegation level talks when the former suggested leveraging the National Waterway-2 on the Brahmaputra river for improving economic ties between the two nations.
They also discussed the potential of common waterways and their utilization in enhancing connectivity between Bhutan and India’s northeastern region.
Sonowal while highlighting the traditional bonds of friendship between the two countries, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary Act East Policy had added new momentum to trade and socio-cultural movement between the two nations.
On the huge opportunities offered by the MMLP in Jogighopa and the gateway in Dhubri, Sonowal said India's advantage in providing infra support and low-cost logistics can bring a new era of development for the neighboring country, reported NDTV.
