In a letter addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. He also wished Pakistan on its National Day on March 23.

“As a neighboring country, India desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. For this, an environment of trust, devoid of terror and hostility, is imperative,” reads the letter sent on Tuesday.

The greeting came weeks after the two countries issued a joint statement announcing the strict observance of ceasefire along the LOC. Furthermore, last week, both  PM Imran Khan and the Pakistan Army Chief expressed their intentions of easing tensions with India. However, both reiterated that India needed to take the first step.

Earlier, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also attempted to make peace with India but his efforts got derailed following a terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri, Kashmir.

In a recent interview to The Wire, former Pakistan high commissioner to India Abdul Basit criticized the approach of Sharif, accusing him of unilaterally pandering to Indian interests.

He also said Sharif and his foreign secretary took the unusual approach of communicationon using an Indian businessman and had not kept the Pakistan Embassy in India informed about developments. He further said during Sharif’s time, the Foreign Office had cut him off from communication while he was posted in India and communicated directly through junior officers of the embassy.
