India focuses on the development of connectivity with Bangladesh and beyond as the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.

"Connectivity between the two countries can change the face of the region. Connectivity is productivity," Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told reporters after a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at the state guesthouse Padma today.

Jaishankar is on a one-day visit to Dhaka ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit on March 26-27 to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence.

Jaishankar arrived here on Thursday to prepare the ground for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh's independence.

A special flight carrying Jaishankar reached the Bangabandhu airbase in Dhaka at 1000 hours. On arrival, Jaishankar was greeted by his counterpart AK Abdul Momen.

The two ministers will hold a bilateral meeting at the state guest house Padma. Jaishankar was also scheduled to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam told the media on Wednesday that the two sides will discuss ways to take their partnership, especially in connectivity, forward besides the celebration.

India has recently allowed Bangladesh's transports to travel to Bhutan and Nepal directly.

''It's a big achievement for us,'' Shahriar said.
