Former Mrs. World Caroline Jurie was arrested by the Sri Lankan Police on Thursday morning for creating chaos at the Mrs. Sri Lanka beauty pageant when she forcibly took away the crown of the winner, declared her ineligible and crowned the runner-up.
Along with her, the police also arrested former model Chula Padmendra, who assisted and supported Jurie in removing the crown of the winner, Pushpika De Silva, on the stage, according to Daily Mirror. The video of the entire show has since gone viral.
Jurie was widely censured on social media after she removed the crown from De Silva, who minutes ago had been declared winner and was standing with a bouquet of flowers in her arms, beaming with happiness, and instead awarded it to the first runner-up during the beauty pageant in Colombo earlier this week.
The incident happened when De Silva, who had been crowned, was getting ready to take a victory lap. But she was stopped by Jurie, who alleged that De Silva is not the winner as she has been divorced by her husband. She went on to announce that according to the Mrs. World rules participants cannot be separated or divorced.
As Jurie started pulling out hairpins from De Silva’s hair, supporting the crown, Padmendra came to help her when De Silva tried to resist the move. The runner-up, who looked a little dazed in the beginning, later cried tears of joy when the crown was placed on her head.
A teary-eyed De Silva left the stage, even as celebratory music played in the background throughout the incident. Jurie’s action left the judges and audiences stunned. The pageant officials also didn’t intervene.
De Silva was crowned by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's wife, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, and Mayor Rosy Senanayake and Chandimal Jayasinghe,
Jurie and Padmendra were arrested after they appeared at the police station to record their statements early Thursday, the newspaper quoted the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the police was currently recording statements from the arrested suspects.
The Daily Mirror quoting sources said that Jurie had refused to apologize to De Silva, who also refused to settle the matter without an apology.
De Silva got admitted to a hospital the next day and charged that she has received head injuries when Jurie snatched her crown. She also registered a police complaint against the two women.
After much criticism, both in Sri Lanka and internationally, the crown on Tuesday was returned to De Silva, who has claimed that she is yet to get her divorce, although she is separated from her husband. The pageant organisers also apologised to De Silva.
She also wrote a lengthy post clarifying her position.
Born in Sri Lanka’s Kandana in 1992, Jurie is a model and winner of the Mrs. Sri Lanka World 2019 title. She represented Sri Lanka at the Mrs. World 2020 pageant held on December 2019 at the grand finale held in Las Vegas.
