The Export Development Council (EDC) convened yesterday under the patronage of Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for the first time in 28 years after its establishment.
The Export Development Council was established by the Export Development Act, 1979. It was expected to strengthen exporters and solve problems in the sector. The functions of the Export Development Board were to formulate, approve and recommend policies. The President holds the post of Chairman of EDC under the Act.
Addressing the first meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (23), the President stated that the scope of the EDC was to develop the export sector of both the public and private sectors and to accelerate the building of a people-centric economy by conquering the global market.
