Authorities in Sri Lanka on Saturday started random nationwide testing to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus, reported Daily Mirror. Other measures were also introduced as the island nation gets ready to celebrate the Tamil and Sinhala new year. 

“Random PCR and antigen tests will be conducted islandwide during the weekend from today and the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year week,” Sri Lanka Army Chief General Shavendra Silva, who also heads the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19, said. 

He also expressed concern over the infection rate in the northern parts of the country, especially in Jaffna city. However, he added that the situation would be brought under control soon. 

Around, 3000 people have been put under quarantine following the spread in the northern part. On Friday, the city reported around 300 cases. Those returning from abroad are also turning positive in large numbers. 

“The rise in numbers among the returnees is because we are now bringing in a large number from overseas.” Silva was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror. 

He added, “Presently, we have an average of 1,200 passengers arriving on a daily basis but we have blocked all the chances of them going to society as they are being directed to the quarantine facilities. So there is nothing to worry (about),”
