President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has stated that plans should be made to generate 70% of the country’s total electricity requirement from renewable energy sources by the year 2030.

Due to climate change, all countries in the world are moving away from fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum to renewable energy. Annual increase in electricity demand in the country is 6%. Energy demand is expected to increase rapidly with the launch of development projects.

The President pointed out that renewable energy sources should be used as much as possible to pave the way for future generations to enjoy the benefits of sustainable development.
