Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached Gujarat's Bhavnagar and undertook an aerial survey to take stock of the situation as Cyclone Tauktae left a trail of devastation behind it in the western Indian coastal state.  According to local media reports, 13 people were killed in Gujarat as the super cyclone uprooted trees and electric poles and damaged thousands of houses, blowing at a wind speed of 100 kmph.

Media reports said that at least 16,000 houses were destroyed,  over 40,000 trees and over 70,000 electric poles were uprooted, according to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

As many as 5,951 villages have no electricity, he added.  

Modi proceeded for an aerial survey of Una, Diu, Jafrabad, and Mahua after landing in Bhavnagar.

"Undertook an aerial survey over parts of Gujarat and Diu to assess the situation in the wake of Cyclone Tauktae. Central Government is working closely with all the states affected by the cyclone," the Prime Minister tweeted.

Several places in Gujarat received heavy downpours. These include the Saurashtra coast to North Gujarat, with 46 talukas receiving 100 mm of rain and 12 of them received 150 mm to 175 mm of downpour, added media reports.

Indian Navy has fished out 14 bodies from the Arabian Sea in the ongoing search and rescue operation as several people are feared drowned.

A tug boat has reportedly sunk in the Arabian Sea. It had 13 members on board, two of whom have been rescued by the Navy and the search is on for the remaining 11 individuals.

Barge P305, was contracted by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), the report said, adding that it sank around 7 pm on Monday night with 273 crew members on board.

All the members were forced to jump into the turbulent waters of the Arabian Sea as the barge sank.

The navy rescued 188 of the 273 crew members some 20 hours after they were forced to battle the choppy waters of the Arabian Sea. However, the search and rescue operations became difficult as bad weather followed.

Naval warship INS Kochi brought 188 crew members rescued from the barge in Mumbai on Wednesday.

At least 137 crew members of GAL Constructor, another barge which went down in the sea north off Mumbai, were rescued by navy and coast guard.
