After the reopening of tourism on 15 July, the Maldives received a significant number of tourists from the Gulf states. Apart from Emirates, Gulf Air, Etihad, Qatar Airways are also operating to, and from, the Maldives.
The Maldives’ tourism has shown a remarkable turnaround even in the pandemic time. On Saturday it recorded the highest arrival, 4179, in a single day since it reopened in July. The same day, the country received its 100,000th tourist.
The Maldives had revised its arrival target to 100,000 tourists for the remainder of 2020 when it reopened in July. The country achieved the target around 18 days before 2020 comes to an end. The tourism ministry in the Maldives now further revised its projection for 2020, to 5,25,000, (including 400,000 arrivals it had recorded before the pandemic)
Showing his gratitude for all stakeholders, the country’s Tourism Minister Abdullah Mausoom tweeted on Sunday, “How do I thank a team that has surpassed my expectations? Lost for words! Thank you #TourismTeam.”
