Male: Three Maldivian parliamentarians have been fined for violating lockdown measures.

A strict lockdown was imposed on Male' city area after the first local transmission case of COVID-19 was detected in the capital on April 15. Those in the area are allowed to go outside only with the permission of Maldives police. A large number of people have been fined or arrested for defying lockdown protocols.

AVAS has learnt that three members of the parliament are among those fined for violating lockdown protocols. Police have not commented on the matter thus far.

A parliamentary sitting was held at the People's Majlis prior to the government granting lockdown ease. A special permit was issued to members attending the sitting.
