At a virtual ceremony, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering on Friday jointly launched the phase-II of RuPay card in Bhutan. Last year in August, during his state visit to Bhutan, Modi had launched the first phase of RuPay card in the Himalayan nation.“Today, we welcome Bhutan as a full partner in this Rupay network,” Modi said, adding the move will integrate both the nations financially.

Since the launch of the first phase in August 2019, a total of 11,000 transactions have been reported in Bhutan through RuPay cards. The number of transactions would have been much higher if it wasn’t the COVID crisis, said PM Modi.

The rolling out of the second phase of the RuPay card will significantly boost the ease of financial transactions in businesses and the tourism sector benefiting both the countries.

Hailing the success of space and technology cooperations between the two nations, Modi said Bhutan has been able to better manage its natural disasters using the services of the South Asia Satellite System offered by India.

“India has always used the space sector for development purposes, and India and Bhutan both share these objectives,” said the Indian prime minister, adding the country is committed to sharing its space experiences with the Himalayan Kingdom.

“The special bond and friendship between Bhutan and India aren’t only invaluable to both the nations but also a unique example for the world,” said PM Modi speaking at the same event.

These initiatives will create new ways of connectivity for the next generations of both countries, said Modi highlighting the potentials joint initiatives.

With this launch, around 100,000 Bhutanese nationals living in India are expected to be benefited from it.
