Fulling the expectations of the Tamil people for equality, justice, and peace within a united Sri Lanka will be in its own interest, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishakar said on Thursday.

Jaishankar’s statement came when he was responding to a question in the Indian parliament. He also informed lawmakers about India’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s reconciliation process. During his trip to the island nation, he said, he had discussed the reconciliation process with its top leadership there.

"During my discussions, I reiterated that India's support for the reconciliation process in Sri Lanka is longstanding, as indeed for an inclusive political outlook that encourages ethnic harmony," Jaishankar said in his response.

Jaishankar said, “That ( the Tamil expectation) applies equally to the commitments made by the Sri Lankan government on a meaningful devolution, including the 13th Amendment to the Constitution."

India has continuously raised the issue of Tamil reconciliation during various bilateral meetings.
