A family suspected to be from India’s Rameshwaram was arrested in Sri Lanka’s Jaffna peninsula for illegal entry, police said, Economynext reported.
Police media spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the family, comprising a 61-year-old woman, her 34-year-old daughter and the daughter’s two sons aged nine and five, were taken into custody.
Initial investigation revealed they had come from Rameshwaram, he said.
“They had arrived from India on May 6 on an Indian boat halfway and the rest of the way aboard a Sri Lankan fishing boat,” Rohana said.
Earlier this month, police found two other families who had allegedly come to Sri Lanka illegally and were said to be hiding in Puttalam and Kochchikade, the Economynext report added.
