The Core group of the United Nations Human Rights Councils on Sri Lanka recognized and welcomed Sri Lanka’s efforts but added more needs to be done. The group also made it clear that they would bring a resolution in the upcoming 46th session of the UNHRC.

“We recognize and welcome the progress made by the Government of Sri Lanka in rebuilding infrastructure, demining, land return, and resettling internally displaced persons,” Colombo Page reported a statement released by the core group. “However, it is clear that more needs to be done to address the harmful legacies of war and build sustainable peace in the country,” the statement added.

Expressing their commitment to accountability, sustainable peace, and reconciliation, the core group paid tribute to the people of Sri Lanka.

In the upcoming session, the Sri Lanka government is likely to face an intrusive, and humiliating resolution as the recent report of the Sri Lankan representative of the UNHRC made some strong recommendations, including a trial in the International Criminal Court to prosecute the war criminals.

In 2019, the Rajapaksa government had withdrawn Sri Lanka from the co-sponsorship of the 2015 UNHRC resolution on promoting justice, accountability, reconciliation, and sustainable peace among the war-affected communities, majority Tamils in the north and east of the country.

To brace itself for the session, the Sri Lanka government has also stepped up its diplomatic efforts, and started reaching out to several countries for diplomatic supports. Sri Lankan President Gotabya Rajapksa has also reportedly written a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his, and his government’s support. However, Sri Lanka is yet to receive an assurance on it.
