The Taliban has said that they had shared a 90-day plan with the United States in December for a reduction in violence in Afghanistan, reported TOLOnews. However, the proposal, so far, has not culminated into any agreement.

The insurgent group’s spokesperson Dr. Muhammad Naeem, speaking to TOLOnews, confirmed it. The reduction in violence, he said, didn’t mean a ceasefire; the overall number of operations will be reduced.

“We proposed a draft in December, which involved all operations being reduced, but so far a final agreement has not been reached,” he was quoted as saying by TOLOnews. “All conditions will be applied in the upcoming 90 days. It will include a reduction in violence and avoiding big attacks on districts.”

Interestingly, the disclosure came days after the Moscow conference last week. The US, China, Russia, and Pakistan issued a joint declaration, which also asked the Afghan insurgent group not to start their spring offensive this time.

Amid renewed push for the Afghan peace process, the Taliban has come under immense international pressure to reduce violence.

During his recent visit to Afghanistan, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “It’s obvious that the level of violence remains pretty high in the country. We would really like to see that violence come down and I think if it does come down, it can begin to set the conditions for, you know, some really fruitful diplomatic work.”
