The negotiation team of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will leave for Doha, Qatar, today to resume the second phase of the Intra-Afghan dialogue with the Taliban, and possibly to find a solution to end the four-decade-old war in the country.
The talks are to resume on Tuesday. On Sunday evening, the negotiation team met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at the Presidential Palace in Kabul. Appreciating the role played by the negotiators in the first round, Ghani assured the team of full support from the government.
He also said the views of the different layers of Afghan society, the advice of the Loya Jirga (grand assembly of elders), and the Afghan constitution define the authority and the agenda of the negotiation team, according to a report by TOLOnews.
Ceasefire and the division of power between the Taliban and the republic will remain the key priority areas for the government to discuss in this round of talks. The issue of the formation of the Interim government is also likely to come up in this round of talks.
In the meeting, Masoom Stanekzai, the head of the Republic negotiation team, briefed President Ghani about his interactions regarding the peace process with the different sections of the society. In the last few weeks, Stanakzai held discussions with civil societies, youth, and women organizations among others to seek their views and aspirations.
The team also held deliberations with the leadership council of the High Council for National Reconciliation. The high council, headed by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, is the highest decision-making authority related to peace talks with the Taliban.
The council was formed to forge unity, inclusivity on the side of the government.
