Ahmed Faysal, 26, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested by Singapore authorities on the suspicion of planning terrorism-related activities, the Straits Times reported citing an official statement.
Faysal was arrested on 2 November and the preliminary investigation by the Internal Security Department suggested he had been radicalized and was planning to carry out violence and terrorism-related activities in support of his religion.
In early 2017, Faysal came to Singapore from Bangladesh as a construction worker. It is there only he started consuming the online propaganda by ISIS and became radicalized.
He came under the scrutiny of security agencies when he began creating fake social media accounts to share materials promoting violence.
Faysal had reportedly intended to carry out attacks against Hindu police officials in Bangladesh, said Singapore Home Minister K Shanmugam. He also informed the Commercial Affairs Department was also investigating him for possible terrorism financing activities.
Singapore, a multi-ethnic and religiously diverse society, has very strict laws to maintain communal harmony in the country. The home minister informed that 15 Bangladeshi nationals and a Malaysian had been repatriated to their respective countries for stoking anti-France sentiments.
