The deportation of Noor Chaudhary, a convicted killer of Bangladesh founding father Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, is the “most important issue” in bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Canada, Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh high commissioner to Canada, said. 

Noor, along with eleven others, was convicted for killing Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by a court in 2010 after a lengthy trial. However, at the time of the verdict, six of the convicts, including Noor, were absconding. 

If this one (Noor’s deportation issue) is resolved, Canada-Bangladesh relations can be the best ever,” said Khalilur, calling it the “single most important” issue. 

In 1996, Noor and his wife went to Canada and applied there for refugee protection. His application was later rejected in 2002.

Rahman urged the Canadian authority to deport him immediately to improve ties between the two countries. He also asked the Canadian government to disclose his immigration status. 

Abdul Majid, one of the killers, had been found living in India for years and was arrested last year. The Bangladesh government executed the death penalty and hanged him in 2020.
