Bhutan’s capital Thimphu will soon get a fully automated sewage system with a capacity to treat 12 MLD sewage by the beginning of next year, the Kuensel reported.
The system with a screening system, pumping station, artificial aeration, and disinfection tank will soon replace the existing wastewater stabilization ponds in the downtown Babesia area.
The project, which started in 2012 with $14 million estimated cost, is on a cost-sharing basis between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Bhutanese government and will cater to the need of around 100,000 people in the capital. The work on the project was delayed due to restrictions placed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
