Ahmed Abeed Abdul Gafoor, the former vice president of Maldives, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday evening by a Criminal Court, in a case involving embezzlement and money laundering in Maldives Marketing and Public Relation Corporation(MMPRC).

Last year in August, what was his failed bid to seek asylum in India, the former vice president tried to flee his country by a boat, and was subsequently detained by Indian authorities in Tuticorin district of Tamilnadu for entering India illegally. 

As a part of a deal with the Prosecutor General’s office, he had pleaded guilty to all charges; in an attempt to reduce his sentence. The Judge, however, announced a 20 years prison sentence, along with a fine of 2 MVR.
