As foreign forces started to withdraw from Afghanistan, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned of “huge consequences”. She warned of resumption of terrorist activities and the subsequent outpouring of refugees from the country.
In an interview to CNN, she said, “This is what we call a wicked problem. There are consequences both foreseen and unintended of staying and of leaving.” She also warned of a possible takeover of power by the Taliban and a collapse of the Afghan government.
She said that the government should consider a long term visa program for many thousand Afghans who worked with the US and NATO during these years.
In the CNN interview, Clinton claimed that there would be a new civil war in case the Afghan government collapsed in the country. Already, local media reports suggest the emergence of local militias and warlords in the areas abandoned by the government forces.
In 2001, after the attack of 9/11 by al-Qaeda in the United States, the latter invaded Afghanistan and dislodged the Taliban regime that was suspected of giving protection to Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda. Last month in April, US President Joe Biden announced the unconditional withdrawal of the US forces from Afghanistan by 11 September this year.
