Owners of fire-stricken New Diamond agrees to pay full compensation to Sri Lanka

The owners the MT New Diamond supertanker which caught fire in sea off Eastern Coast off Sri Lanka while carrying two million barrels of crude has agreed to pay full amount of compensation demanded by the Sri Lankan government.

Accordingly, the Greek company Porto Emporios Shipping Inc, which reportedly owns the supertanker has agreed to pay Rs. 442 million (approximately $ 2.4 million).

The Attorney General had earlier submitted an interim claim estimating Rs. 340 million to reimburse the services rendered by the Sri Lanka Navy, the Sri Lanka Air Force, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Colombo Dockyard Company, Maritime Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) and the Coast Guard after the fire on Sept. 3 until Sept 15.
