In what could be an ambitious target to achieve, Sri Lanka has planned to inoculate all of its population of about 21.5 million in three months’ time by setting up around 4000 vaccination points across the country, Daily Mirror reported. 

Dr. Amal Harsha De Silva, the secretary to Secretary to State Ministry of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID-19 Disease Control, informed the media on Saturday. The government had identified 4000 locations where vaccination centers could be set up. 

“With this system in place, we hope that Sri Lanka will be able to complete the vaccination program within three months and be named as the first State to do so,” he was quoted as saying by Daily Mirror. 

Noting constraints in achieving the milestone, he said a lot would depend on the availability of vaccines. Currently, the vaccines are in short supply due to higher demand across the nations. 

Sri Lanka has already placed an order of 18 million doses of Covishield to Serum Institute of India. 

Silva also said Sri Lankan authorities are in touch with Russia and China regarding vaccine procurement. We have also taken measures to distribute two million doses of Pfizers. 

India has earlier donated 1 million doses of Covishield to Sri Lanka under the VaccineMatri diplomacy. China, too, has announced donating 300,000 doses of Sinopharm to Sri Lanka.
