The United State is looking forward to partnering with Sri Lanka’s newly elected government and has called for upholding of human rights and rule of law.

The people of Sri Lanka went to polls to exercise their fundamental democratic rights to elect the next parliament, the US embassy in Colombo said.

“The United States congratulates Sri Lanka on conducting the elections in a peaceful and orderly manner despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement said.

“As the new parliament convenes, we hope the government will renew its commitments to building an inclusive economic recovery, upholding human rights and the rule of law, and protecting the country’s sovereignty.
