Ahmed Siyam Mohemed, the leader of opposition in the Maldives’ parliament, has been heard calling for the hanging of a fellow lawmaker in an audio clip that went viral on the internet. Following the incident, Parliament has sent him a write warning not to repeat such language.
The incident took place during a meeting of the Parliament Committee on the National Security. In the audio clip that went viral, Siyam is heard calling for the hanging of Hisaan Hussain, a ruling party lawmaker. Both are members of the committee.
The committee is probing the incident of a security breach of the country’s Speaker Mohammed Nasheed.
“Hisaan must really be hanged, [doing so] will not be a sin,” he was quoted as saying in the clip by Raajje TV.
Soon after the incident, Parliament’s Committee on Privileges and Ethics reviewed the matter and advised Siyam against repeating such acts. In the order passed by the committee, he was also asked to tender a written apology to Hisaan.
