Aminath Waheeda, the only female taxi driver in the capital city of Male, has faced repeated attacks in the past few months. The law enforcement agencies faced criticism on Monday from MPs when the issue was raised under an emergency motion in parliament, reported Sun.mv.

Aminath Waheeda’s car has been vandalized five times. Debating the issue in the parliament, Ali Azim, a MP, termed the incident “an issue of great concern,” and said that despite the events being reported to the police on five occasions earlier, the police failed to act on, investigate the case properly.

Mohammad Nasheed,  parliament speaker, linked the attacks to extremism, calling it an “organized work of force by individuals” to confine women to their homes. He added extremists wanted to shape the society into the shape of their ideology.

Eva Abdullah, the deputy speaker, even called for an inquiry into the police inaction by the National Integrity Commission. "This is a huge issue when the suspect remains on loose after attacking a woman five times when he is released due to lack of evidence each time,” she added.
