India handed over a cheque of NRs $306.6 million ( USD 2.618 million) to Nepali authorities on Wednesday in form of reimbursement India has pledged for the reconstruction of educational institutions in earthquake-affected districts in Nepal.

India has financed so far around 50,000 housing projects, costing $150 million. India has also set aside $50 million each for the reconstruction of hospitals and the restoration of cultural heritage sites.

So far India had reimbursed around $7 million for the purpose, says a statement released by its Kathmandu embassy. Under the High Impact Community Development Projects Programme India has pledged around $50 million for the reconstruction of educational facilities in the Himalayan nation.

Namgya Khampa, India’s deputy chief of mission in Kathmandu, handed over the check to Sushil Gyawali, the CEO of the Nepal Reconstruction Authority. The two sides also discussed the progress in various reconstruction projects financed by India.

“As close neighbors, India and Nepal share unique ties of friendship and cooperation. Today’s signing of the MoU reflects (the)continued commitment of Government of India in complementing the efforts of Government of Nepal in creating infrastructure in priority sectors,” reads a statement released by the Indian embassy.

On the same day, officials from both sides also signed another memorandum of understanding to extend NRs  44.13 million for the construction of a lab and library building in the Mahadev Higher Secondary school in Chankheli Darma. The project will be financed by India under Nepali-Bharat Maitri Development Partnership.
