Supply of oxygen from India to Bangladesh through Benapole port has been suspended for the last four days following oxygen shortage in Covid-battered India, according to The Daily Star.

Benapole port's Customs House Deputy Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman said the import of oxygen from India has been suspended since Thursday.

India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce Director Matiar Rahman, also a representative of Linde Bangladesh Ltd which imports oxygen from India, said Dhaka was now planning to import oxygen from Singapore.

Engaged in a grim battle against a massive second wave of the Coronavirus infection, India has been suffering from an acute shortage of oxygen.

The last truck with oxygen from India entered Bangladesh on April 22, said customs sources at the land port.

Sources said every month around 30,000 metric tonnes of oxygen is imported from India through Benapole port.

The Daily Star quoted Biswajit Das, a representative of Indian Oxygen Ltd, as saying that oxygen supply has been suspended to fulfil the requirements of Covid-19 patients in India.
