Japanese has extended $60,000 to the Sri Lankan government for a project to supply clean water to one of the remotest communities of Nuwara Eliya district of Sri Lanka, reported Colombopage. 

Japanese Ambassador Akira Sugiyama and W M P R Bandaratilleke, Country Director (Interim) of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Sri Lanka signed the grant contract on 9th March 2021 at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo. 

The proposed gravity-fed water system would enable access of clean water to communities and improve hygiene. 

The community, located in tea plantations amid mountains, is the remotest people of the district and has struggled for years to get a clean water supply. Presently, a natural stream flowing from other villages through old, damaged, and unclean water tanks, is the only source of water for the people there. 

The Japan-funded new gravity-fed water system would enable the supply of clean, filtered water to these communities, the report said. The fund will also be utilized for training sessions promoting good hygiene practices among the 750 families of the division.
