A special investigation has been launched to find out whether the new strain of the coronavirus, which is already being reported in a number of countries around the world, has reached Sri Lanka.

Scientists at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine and Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit, University of the Sri Jayewardenepura have launched studies to detect the new COVID-19 Variants that is spreading fast in several countries.

The Director of the Immunology and Cell Biology Unit Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, told Neth News that a routine PCR test in Sri Lanka could detect the infection by the coronavirus which could also include the new variant. However, a separate genetic test would be needed to find out if the infected person was infected with the new strain of the virus that is spreading around the world.
