A program for setting up of English Smart Classes designed using the new technology for the purpose of upgrading the English education in schools has been implemented Under the Right to Read Project in collaboration with Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education.

These English smart classes are conducted through an internet app which includes the courses prepared with reference to the English textbooks from grade 3 to grade 8 in the school curriculum, the Ministry said. So far, nearly 510,745 students in 837 schools in the island have been connected with this program.

The program has been already implemented in the schools of Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Central provinces. It has been planned to implement the English smart class program covering all schools in the island by the year 2022 and the actions have been taken to introduce this program in 100 schools in Galle district within the next few months in the first stage of this program in the Southern Province. Under the second stage, the steps will be taken to provide English smart classes to another 100 schools in the Southern province.
