The Sri Lankan government intends to draft a new constitution and present it to Parliament before the end of this year, the Minister of Education, Prof. GL Peiris said.

Minister Peiris speaking to the media after a meeting with the Chief Incumbent of the Getambe Rajopavanarama in Kandy, Keppetiyagoda Sirivimala Nayaka Thero Saturday said an expert committee chaired by President's Counsel Romesh de Silva had been appointed for this purpose and a clear change was needed in the 43-year-old 1978 constitution..

Speaking further the Minister of Education emphasized that despite the continuous statements made by certain groups in the media not to endanger the country, the majority of the people in this country are calling for the opening of schools without allowing the future of children to be darkened.
