The United States Department of State yesterday urged the Sri Lankan government to respect and accommodate religious faith and cultural traditions, in accordance with international public health guidelines in relation to final rites of Covid victims.

In a Twitter message the South and Central Asian Affairs Bureau of the State Department said the people should be allowed to bid farewell to the loved ones in ways consistent their religious beliefs

US Ambassador in Colombo Aliana B. Teplitz said the U.S. has conveyed its concern about Sri Lanka’s mandatory cremation policy and urged respect for the traditions of its diverse communities.
